Indigenous activists linguists awarded queens' grants

Odessa, March 2, 2017 – Linguistics students awarded scholarships by local groups in a bid to support Indigenous language studies in the community of Odessa.


The award was presented to students of the Universidad de Saona, who participated in the Indigenous Language Program. The Indigenous Languages Scholars Program was created to support Indigenous language studies in the city of Saona in southern Ecuador.


As part of the program students receive funds and scholarships for study, activities, and community projects. There are many Indigenous languages that are spoken in this region of Ecuador, particularly among indigenous peoples, and there is a strong need for more studies and research on these languages. "Indigenous language scholarships is a response to this need and the commitment of students to the communities they serve."


The project received funding and scholarships for the following year. First prize winners who applied were awarded for the 2016 academic year.


The project will be available to participants in 2017


In 2016, the team, led by the University of California San Diego, partnered with community-based groups in several towns to present language programs and other educational opportunities to Indigenous students in Odessa, a city of about 1.2 million inhabitants located at the northern edge of South America's Amazon region. The local and regional teams conducted a large public education project involving more than 1000 youth, with approximately 50 speaking an Indigenous language at the beginning of the initiative. The language initiatives were delivered in English, Portuguese, and Cushitic Creole.

Labor set to reveal bunbury candidate in next two weeks

Labour's deputy leader Tom Watson has confirmed the party will set up a leadership contest in April.

But he has not officially named anyone to lead.

Mr Watson told Sky News: "We're all in this together so I want everybody who can do this to do it at the next local election.

"I have no idea what I'm going to do, but I will not be saying if there's going to be somebody in May."

The deputy Labour leader is expected to announce his successor next week, after he has been interviewed by party headquarters, on Saturday.

It comes as his rival Andy Burnham said he was committed to winning a leadership vote, saying: "I think anyone can do a leadership election and that is the only thing you're guaranteed by the members".

Mr Corbyn is also said to have warned his party to stay away from speculation about him stepping down.

Mr Burnham said: "I think at the moment all the speculation is taking place and that's completely unfair. We have a leader who is the best we can be, we have a leader who has been in a very important role with us and now it is time to look for the next leader".
